Traditional Chinese massage (TCM) has been practiced for thousands of years as a holistic approach to healing and wellness in humans. But did you know that many of these techniques can also benefit our canine companions?
At Gentle Dog Canine Massage, we integrate TCM-inspired methods and theory into our sessions to promote your dog’s overall well-being.
What is traditional Chinese massage?
Traditional Chinese massage focuses on the body’s natural energy flow, often referred to as "Qi" (pronounced 'chee', 氣). The goal of TCM is to maintain balance and harmony in the body by stimulating energy pathways, known as meridians (12 in total for dogs that excludes the Governing Vessel Channel and Conception Vessel Channel), and targeting specific pressure points.
For dogs, TCM can help address a range of issues, including stress, pain, and mobility challenges, by improving circulation, relaxing muscles, and enhancing their natural healing processes.
Key traditional Chinese massage techniques for dogs
Tui Na (推拿)
What it is: A more dynamic therapeutic massage technique that combines acupressure, stretching, and kneading to restore balance to the body.
How it helps dogs: Tui Na improves blood flow, relaxes tight muscles, and stimulates energy flow in the meridians. It is particularly beneficial for dogs recovering from injury or dealing with arthritis or stiffness.
Acupressure
What it is: The application of gentle pressure to specific points along the meridians to unblock energy flow.
How it helps dogs: Acupressure can reduce anxiety, alleviate chronic pain, and support organ health. For example, stimulating points on the back can help with digestive issues, while points near the joints can ease arthritis symptoms.
Gua Sha (Scraping, 刮痧)
What it is: The Gua Sha technique is unidirectional in nature, involving a smooth-edged tool to gently scrape the skin and fascia, promoting circulation and releasing tension.
How it helps dogs: Gua Sha helps reducing inflammation and is excellent for relieving chronic muscle tightness.
Bo Jin (Scraping variation, 拨筋)
What it is: Bo Jin techniques are bidirectional in nature, involving a more pointed part of the tool to gently twiddle the skin and fascia, aiming to clear blockages along the meridians.
How it helps dogs: The pointed tips of these tools allow for the more precise targeting of specific areas, loosening tensed and tight tendons and ligaments.

Why do we incorporate TCM into Gentle Dog Canine Massage sessions?
Holistic approach: At Gentle Dog Canine Massage, we believe in addressing the whole dog—not just the manifested symptoms. TCM complements our modern massage techniques, enhancing the effectiveness of our massages and supports long-term wellness.
Customizable treatments: Every dog is unique, and TCM techniques allow us to tailor each session to their specific needs, whether it's pain relief, stress reduction, or mobility improvement.
Gentle and non-invasive: TCM methods have been modified in this context to be incredibly gentle, making them ideal for senior dogs, puppies, or those recovering from surgery or injury.
What can you expect during a massage session?
At Gentle Dog Canine Massage, we’ll start with a consultation to assess their needs. If we determine that implementing TCM techniques are appropriate, this will be integrated into the treatment plan. Whether it's focusing on a particular acupressure point or using Gua Sha to release tension, you’ll notice the benefits in your dog’s relaxation, improved mobility, and overall happiness.
